Specific Areas of Expertise

Procuring AMI and associated technologies can be daunting, particularly considering the explosion in use cases and capabilities that accompanies every new iteration of the technology. Confronted with a vast array of constantly evolving choices for technology and deployment, utilities often lack the in-house expertise needed to determine which options are the best fit for their particular geography, operating environment, and customer mix.

  • Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solutions

Util-Assist is one of the most experienced AMI procurement consultants in North America. Today, we are helping utilities deploy the “next generation” of AMI which brings smart grid enablement and computing at the edge to revolutionize operations and customer service.

  • Meter data management (MDM) solutions

With the vast volumes of data generated by AMI solutions, utilities require an MDM to store, process, analyze, and manipulate the data. We can help you procure, implement and integrate this critical building block to generate value across your utility. Our experts ensure your MDM is fully aligned with upstream and downstream systems to enable seamless data flow and advanced analytics.

  • Customer information systems (CIS)

Aging CIS solutions simply aren’t scalable or flexible enough to enable online self-service and payments or to provide efficient, flexible service billing for multiple commodities. With senior CIS specialists to guide the data migration process, we have completed dozens of successful conversions and upgrades, adding new capabilities that enhance the customer experience.

  • Advanced distribution management systems (ADMS)

We are helping utilities modernize their distribution systems by implementing the most efficient architecture for monitoring, analyzing, controlling, and planning. An ADMS achieves efficiencies through a single database, data model, operational environment, and user interface, resulting in seamless dispatch workflows and consistent data across systems.

  • Web presentment solutions

Our customer experience (CX) practice can help you select and implement Web presentment tools to enable your customers to view their consumption patterns online, empowering them to make informed decisions about energy conservation. We help utilities procure and implement engaging, intuitive portals that strengthen customer relationships and promote ongoing digital adoption.

  • Data analytics platforms

We can help you turn insights into actions by consolidating and transforming disparate data sources in data analytics platforms. Our services include conducting comprehensive analytics audits, defining data analytics use cases, developing enterprise information management strategies, and establishing data governance.

Frequently Asked Questions

AMI 2.0 meters deliver high-resolution, low-latency data to surpass first-generation AMI capabilities. These advanced meters deliver granular insights into energy consumption patterns, voltage levels, and power quality, and can accurately detect anomalies, such as energy theft or equipment malfunction. AMI 2.0 meters also bring a new dimension to utility management with their ability to run apps at the edge. The meters have the capability to process data locally, allowing for immediate action and real-time analytics beyond just monitoring consumption and demand.

Use cases fall into two broad categories. Customer-side use cases provide better customer service or give customers insights into their consumption. Use cases include high bill alerts, EV charging, and appliance load disaggregation. Operational-side use cases are related to the operation and management of the distribution system, such as volt/VAR optimization and distribution automation, or meter monitoring, such as theft detection and high temperature alerts. Next-generation communications networks can also form the cornerstone for the development of smart cities, enabling use cases like dynamic lighting, smart parking, and traffic management.

The most successful AMI projects begin with full organizational alignment—from regulators and executives to front-line staff. A strong business case is essential, clearly defining the opportunity, assessing risks, and presenting a solid financial model that accounts for all operational costs, including integration, training, communications, and ongoing support. It should outline the deployment strategy, timelines, and rate impact in line with the utility’s capital plan, while also highlighting the advanced capabilities that will benefit both the organization and its customers. Keeping the business case active and revisiting it regularly ensures continued alignment and value realization.

Equally important is early engagement with your employees—the ones who will ultimately adopt and support the new systems. Begin conversations early, communicate a compelling vision, and ensure project sponsors are both informed and invested. A well-executed education and communication plan is the foundation for driving buy-in, managing change, and ensuring long-term success.
